![]() Recognizing Todd and his vivid, cryptic death had made an impression on the audience, The Mentalist spent much of season 3 investigating his murder via another colorful supporting character, J.J. “Red Moon” exemplified another winning storytelling stratagem: Milking great story for more good story. In the last scene, Todd – dying from severe burns after being set on fire by an unknown assailant – chilled Patrick – and us – by simply reciting a verse from “The Tyger.” With that, we understood Todd was another Red John associate. The prime suspect was a kooky astrologer, and the story made fun sport of him, but the murderer turned out to be another cop, Todd Johnson. One of The Mentalist’s best hours, “Red Moon,” was a twisty tale about someone who was killing police officers. Other times, an episode that seemed to have nothing to do with Red John would surprise you with a nifty beat that nurtured it. Sometimes, the show hit the story square on the head with a dedicated Red John episode. ©Focus Films SOMETHING NEW, Simon Baker, Sanaa Lathan, director Sanaa Hamri, producer Stephanie Allain, on set, 2006.The Mentalist did an impressive job of building the Red John mystery during its first three seasons. ©Focus Films RESTAURANT, Elise Neal, Simon Baker-Denny, 1998, (c)Palisades Pictures LLC SOMETHING NEW, Donald Faison, Simon Baker, Sanaa Lathan, 2006. ©Focus Films SOMETHING NEW, Simon Baker, Sanaa Lathan, 2006. #4,, ©CBS SOMETHING NEW, Sanaa Lathan, Simon Baker, 2006. ![]() #4,, ©WB The Mentalist, Simon Baker (L), Robin Tunney (R), 'Red Listed', Season 6, Ep. #2,, ©CBS The Mentalist, Simon Baker (L), Robin Tunney (R), 'Red Listed', Season 6, Ep. #3,, ©CBS The Mentalist, Simon Baker, 'Black-Winged Red Bird', Season 6, Ep. #14,, ©CBS The Mentalist, Simon Baker, 'Not One Red Cent', Season 5, Ep. #21,, ©CBS The 39th Annual People's Choice Awards, Robin Tunney (L), Simon Baker (R),, ©CBS The Mentalist, Simon Baker (L), Robin Tunney (R), 'At First Blush', Season 4, Ep. Undeterred, Baker finally received his proper due as the star of "The Mentalist" (CBS, 2008-15), which allowed the actor to fully display the promise he had demonstrated from the start of his career. He stepped up with key supporting roles in "Something New" (2006) and "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006), only to stumble when his regular role on the high-profile crime drama "Smith" (CBS, 2006) was cut short after only three aired episodes. Though he had made significant strides in his career, Baker's Hollywood fortunes fluctuated, thanks to a string of misfire movies like "The Affair of the Necklace" (2004) and "The Ring Two" (2005). Confidential," Baker landed supporting roles in Ang Lee's "Ride With the Devil" (1999) and the big-budget bomb "Red Planet" (2000) before starring on the hit lawyer drama, "The Guardian" (CBS, 2001-04).
